About Holland Bloorview

Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital (Holland Bloorview) is Canada's largest children's rehabilitation hospital. Our vision is to create a world of possibility for kids with disability.

We see children with cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, muscular dystrophy, amputation, epilepsy, spina bifida, arthritis, cleft-lip and palate, autism and other developmental disabilities. A small number of our clients have complex chronic diseases that require round-the-clock medical care. We pioneer treatments, technologies, therapies and real-world programs that give children with disabilities the tools to participate fully in life.

Holland Bloorview is also proud to be a world-class teaching hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, training future health-care specialists in the field of childhood disability.

About Childhood disability

The numbers may surprise you. Worldwide nearly 200 million children experience some form of disability. Approximately 4.4 million people in Canada have disabilities, representing 14.3 per cent of the population.

There are many kinds of disabilities. They can be noticeable, hidden, permanent, temporary, or occur only at certain times. Some children are born with a disability. For others, the disability happens because of an illness or an accident. Medical advances mean that kids with disabilities are living longer and able to participate more fully in life than ever before. Still, children with disabilities are between two and 10 more likely to suffer social exclusion and bullying compared with typically developing peers.

Quick Facts about Childhood Disability:

  • In Ontario alone, there are almost 230,000 kids with disabilities.
  • One in five Canadian families is raising a child with a significant emotional, behavioral or developmental disability
  • 15 % of children will have some developmental or learning disability, 7% will have a major disability and the remainder will be milder degrees of impairment.
